Food waste and the kitchen caddy: a practical guide

Food waste services commonly use a small kitchen caddy and a larger outdoor container, but accepted liners and set-out rules remain local.

What normally belongs in food waste

Food scraps and preparation waste are typical examples. Do not assume packaging, liquids, garden material or compostable products are accepted.

Keep the caddy manageable

Empty it regularly, use only the liner type your council allows and rinse the container as needed.

England policy note

GOV.UK guidance describes the national England requirement, including weekly food-waste collection unless a transitional arrangement applies.

Find your council

Use a postcode to identify the authority responsible for your area, then follow the official local instructions.

We use an ONS-backed postcode match to identify the council. We do not store the postcode.
